Firebird Chard

from $4.75

Firebird is an F1 hybrid Swiss chard cultivar, noted for its deep red leaves and petioles (stems). It has glossy, savoyed (crinkled) leaves and narrower petioles than typical green‑stem chards.

Because of its red coloration, it contains pigments such as betalains / anthocyanins / related antioxidant compounds (shared with beet family relatives) which can influence flavor, color, and nutritional makeup.

Firebird is sometimes compared to beet / chard crosses, or at least shares lineage with other red‑leaf or beet‑hybrid greens (in botanical family Beta) — chard and beets are the same species (Beta vulgaris) differentiated by cultivar/subspecies.

Health Benefits :

  • High in vitamins A, C, and K, essential for maintaining overall health and supporting immune function.

  • Contains powerful antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and reduce inflammation in the body.

  • Vitamin K plays a crucial role in bone mineralization and helps prevent osteoporosis.

  • High levels of potassium and dietary nitrates can contribute to lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health.

  • The fiber content in chard promotes healthy digestion and can prevent constipation.

  • Rich in chlorophyll, which helps detoxify the body by eliminating harmful toxins.

  • Loaded with carotenoids, like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are vital for maintaining good vision and eye health.
